    Description

In the old days, these canisters were found in drop-in dipping cabinets that held syrups and toppings at "Soda Fountains" that were found in virtually every drug store in America.  They were also then, as now, found at Ice Cream Parlors.  The Soda Fountains are gone and today's Ice Cream Parlors use canisters made of plastic that are made in China.  These old canisters were made by Hall Pottery in Ohio, U.S.A. of fired clay with an applied ceramic glaze.
Today many use them in their home kitchens as a decorative way to dispense chocolate or other toppings for ice cream creations or even for syrup for pancake breakfasts.
This syrup jar has only one flake on the back right corner (see photos) but is otherwise in great condition.  The pump,
    a very early model,
is in excellent working order.  (The design of these fountain pumps allows them to still be working at the coming of the next ice age!)   I'm sure that the pump was not made by Hall Pottery but I can find no makers mark on the pump.
The tab under the lens on the pump handle reads
    "Sterilized Chocolate Flavored Beverage".
I've seen bottle caps around for this beverage so, like Coca Cola, it was marketed in both a bottled variety and a fountain variety.  It must have been a very early brand, perhaps going back to the early 20th Century.
The entire canister has a bright and lustrous black glaze.  There are no chips or cracks.  Just the one flake.
The pump is made of stainless steel and works perfectly.  The tab on the pump reads "Sterilized Chocolate" but the lens can be easily unscrewed so that any label can be substituted.
The canister measures about 15 inches high including the pump.  The ceramic Hall jar is 10 3/4 inches high by 7 1/2 inches long by 4 1/4 inches wide.
On the bottom of the jar is embossed "HALL.....MADE IN U.S.A".  The model number is also embossed but I cannot read it.
